Analysing music magazine

In this task I’m going to analysing music magazine named ‘Scratch’.
It’s a music magazine, which inform you about life of Americans artists, concerts, music tours, etc.

On front cover you can se Lil Wayne’s picture with a famous DJ Khaled, whose been working with stars like Akon or Eminem.
‘Simply the best’ – means that when they are playing together, the just crash their music opponents.
Lil Wayne is holding a microphone witch may suggest that he is so confident in things he’s doing best. He is also pointing his thumb at himself doing scare face which may suggest that ‘He’s the man’.

Cover is good looking, tidy and easily to read because of font styles and colours of them. There are two pictures with Lil and Dj Khaled under Lil’s arm.
Background colour is black/gray, I think it’s because Lil Wayne thinks, he’s a gangster.

Title is in Yellow colour, and biggest size at the top of the cover. Yellow colour it’s a great idea because it all creates a little contrast between front cover and font colours.

Overall I really like this one, looks very professional.

Analysing music magazine

In this task I’m going to analysing music magazine named ‘Kerrang!’ - This is sound of a guitar. It’s a music magazine which is giving information about music scene, artist etc. The anchorage text in the lower part of cover says that 2 groups from are going to make a concert and they say that ‘They are going to crush the UK’.

From the front cover, we can simply know that inside of magazine we can find some posters, information about stars like Metallica or Green Day. Bands likely in teenage groups, and sometimes for matures. In central image we can see some guitar guy which is probably a star, which I don’t know. There are more names of groups in cover of magazine like Linkin Park, Led Zeppelin, Enter Shikari, and NOFX. Magazine tries to recommend them by putting their names on top of the magazine. On the left side you can see a lot of pictures of artists. That means inside of magazine you can find a lot of information about mentioned groups.

There is one buzz word, but it’s partly hided because of head of an artist. Seems like ‘Fe is loud’ which means that the guitar guy has to be very good and known at worlds music scene.

The title block design says that is really hardcore magazine because of colours. It’s just black and white, which means it’s simple but the font style and black colour suggest that it must be some kind of rock/emo magazine. Whole magazine is in kind of retro style. I mean there is not too much graphics which is good in its own way. Some Goths fonts, simple colours and that’s it. Magazine coasts 6.99 which isn’t one of the expensive magazines.

Slogans say something about winners which means that magazine is organizing some kind of competition. People are voting for each other to get some extra award for being part of community or whatsoever. It’s some kind of strategy because people are buying magazine not just to read something about their idols, but also for award.

Questionnaire Analysis

In this task I’m going to show you results from my questionnaire which has been made in my class. I have got results from ten different people, from different nationalities and intrests.
They’ve been asked about their age, favourite music style, favourite artist and so on.

For my analysis I have made reports in Microsoft Excel to clearly show you results from my poll. The screens are going to be placed below, and clearly described.
I’ve made only 7 charts, because I had only 7 tick questions.

My first question was about reader’s age.

As you can see, over 60% of people are under eighteen. It’s quite obvious now, that I can’t use bad English in my magazine for young’s good. If parents of them would somehow saw magazine for teenagers with bad language inside, they could sue magazine owners.

Second one is about favourite kind of music.

I have asked people what kind of music they mostly like. The biggest part of the poll is voting for RnB style. I thinks it’s because most of the people whose been asked about it, were woman’s. Over 33% voted for Hip-Hop, and 11% for Rap, which may suggest that rap isn’t the most popular style in my class. It doesn’t mean that everyone hates rap, but it’s just a poll to get some information about classmate’s interests.

Third one is about free goodies like posters.

I decided to include free posters in my magazine for teens with their favourite’s artists. The question was simple and question quite obvious because everyone like free goodies. Hundred percent voted for yes. ____________________________________________________________________

Fourth one is about free goodies as well, but now is a free audio CD.

People asked about free audio CD with TOP 10 songs were totally shocked by that initiative especially when it's for free and legal. Hundred percent voted for YES. _____________________________________________________________

Fifth one asks people how much they can spend on weekly magazine. Because of that is purchase only once per week, price can’t be bigger than 3 pounds.

I’m teenager myself so I exactly know how much teens can spend on magazines. Even if there is free CD and poster I mentioned three acceptable prices for them. Half of people answered that one pound should be good price for the beginning. 40% said that 2 pounds can be acceptable price, just 10% which is 1 person, said that 3 pounds is good enough.

Sixth question asks people how much they can spend on music magazine per month. For my poll I mention 3 prices, either up to 5 pounds, 10 pounds, and finally 15 pounds or more.

Over 50% has answered that they spend up to five pounds per month. No ones want to pay more than 15 pounds per month, 33% are able to pay up to 10 pounds.

Seventh one is about information about concerts/events inside of magazine.

I truly expected the results in this way. I would be really happy to get all the information about concerts from magazine. 90% wants this information, 10% of them don’t.

Planning a Music Magazine

In this task I’m going to plan my Music Magazine, specify exact style of magazine, what type of music about its going to be for whom is magazine directed to and so on.

At the beginning I need to find out some information about other music magazines, to decide for which age I’m going to purchase the magazine.

My magazine is going to teenage audience, exactly for teenagers from 14 to 20 or more. These types of people are really addicted from music in positive way and meaning of this word.
It’s going to be some R’n’b, Hip-Hop, Rap and Pop magazine because these are most popular kinds of music at the moment. Of course there are more of them, but I really like those, so I decided to make a magazine about them.

I consider option to make as the addition to magazine, CD with most popular weekly/monthly songs. Like World’s top 10. I think its good idea for people who don’t have enough money to get some tracks from internet, and it is also going to make my magazine popular.

My magazine will firstly come out every month, to make sure, that people likes it and they are buying it. If I will see some kind of success, I’m going to sell my magazine every week, including audio CD.

It will coast about 2 pounds, I think its good price for young people without much money, if they will get CD with magazine, they will get pretty happy I suppose.

I won’t say that my magazine is going to be ‘glossy’. I’m going to be main designer of this magazine so I will make sure that it will be good looking. Front cover has to look nice, just to take customers eyes on it.
This kind of magazine just can’t look like a newspaper.

Evolution of Britney Spears part 3

This has image has been chosen because it’s truly amazing and perfect for from cover. On the right side there is an anchorage text “Inside an American tragedy” – ‘inside’ can be interpreted as very close. Like this ECU (or rather Extreme Close-Up) on the photo.

Black-white effect is significant because – anchorage text says “American tragedy” which suggest something sad, black-white effect holds-up that phrase.

On that cover the photo is hugely different from two other covers.
They used an ECU picture of her face, not the whole body with details, and breasts pop-up. It is because topic of magazine, which I have already mentioned above.

The Evolution of Britney Spears part 2

Photograph had concentrated at Britney’s right side to show her. In this picture, we have got MS (or rather medium shot, shot from a medium distance.)

She doesn’t wear brassiere which doesn’t mean that she is showing her breasts; in fact she is hiding her breasts under sheet in front of wall. All she’s got is very sexy white underwear it’s cotton by the way, material basically used to erotic underwear, and cute pose.
About pose you can say one thing; it tempts with no doubt. I think when reader is buying this magazine; all he probably thinks is “are there more pictures like this one inside?”

All the lights are focused at her body; you can see it by shadows on the wall. Around her there is only white colour, expect font colours, which is black. It makes good contrast and makes font easier to read.

Evolution of Britney Spears part 1

This image has been cropped to show the whole body of Britney except her part from knees to toes. The photo has been captured from above her to show all her aspects from behind. This is called MLS (or rather medium long shot). This put the audience in a position of power over her. She is almost being submissive allows the audience to look at her.

The typical reader of this magazine is male aged 30. This image is directly appealing to this group.

Britney in this picture is so sexy, but very contradictory. She has got one of the teletubie in her right hand which is weird. Being naked and holding one of the favourites TV hero of children’s. She is wearing black cheapened and white pants. She also has a school shirt referring to the music video and to make-believe of innocent person and also show off her stomach. That kind of fit appealing to every man.

Britney is lying in the middle of the bed. You can see around her purple sheet, very sensual and gentle. All of these makes hot atmosphere around her.

Whole idea of that photo, I mean naked girl lying on the bed, has been copied from movie called ‘Lolita’

There is a lot of white colour on that cover. The fact that Britney is in the bed ready for procreation, with white font which may suggest pureness and virginity, can change true meanings of her words "remain a virgin until marriage".
